The Linux Project
Heavy WIP!
What the heck is this?
This is a little pet project of mine to explain the benefits of using Linux and to provide guidance and beginner resources for using it, and to help dispel the notion that Linux is some super complicated operating system only hackers and professional programmers should use. As long as you don't try to convince yourself you're using Windows, you too can learn to use Linux.
But I don't want to or can't!
That's fine. Many programs are designed for Windows exclusively, and can't be run on Linux, even through compatibility software like WINE or Proton. This writeup is not meant to present Linux as an infalliable platform with no downsides, or to pretend that transitioning to Linux is an entirely painless process that takes no adjusting.
This writeup is designed primarily to help inform you on what Linux is actually like to use and why it is the way it is, and why you should potentially consider using it. Even if you require Windows for exclusive software, this guide will also cover high quality free and open source software you can use regardless of OS. The purpose of this writeup is not to convince you that using Linux will make a computer god or that people who prefer to stick to Windows are plebians or something stupid like that. It's to present you with information so you can make your own informed decision.
This writeup will try to remain unbiased where it can but in some cases giving my opinion is unavoidable. I consider myself to be an intermediate user, comfortable enough with system configuration and terminal utilities but not an expert. My experience in programming is mostly scripting and webdev, so take that as you will. If you have any suggestions or corrections for this list or just want to talk, you can contact me on Discord at "piglad".
Doing the time consuming part first.
